The three Republican candidates for governor each spoke, briefly, at an Iowa Christian Alliance event earlier tonight. NPR: Are Democratic governors at risk?

In Iowa, former GOP Gov. Terry Branstad holds double-digit leads in early polls against Democratic incumbent Gov. Chet Culver. But Brandstad’s campaign believes that has more to do with Iowa-specific concerns than anything happening in Washington.

“In a state like Iowa,” he says, “voters definitely differentiate their state politics form the federal politics.”…full story HERE.

Obradovich: 2-year budget? Power shifts to the governor

Candidates for governor normally have to be elected before they seize power. This small detail doesn’t seem to trouble the Republican gubernatorial field, which has unanimously endorsed the idea of cutting the Legislature back to meeting every other year.

Former Gov. Terry Branstad started the ball rolling this week by proposing that the governor and Legislature approve the state budget every two years instead of annually. And if lawmakers have to budget only every other year, why should they even come to Des Moines on the off year?…full column HERE.
